This instrument is designed
with the Bosa Nova or jazz player in mind. The oval sound hole allows
the upper transverse brace to be moved up almost 2.5 cm (about an inch)
which increases the active portion of the top by almost ten percent.
Combined with the extremely dense cocabolo sides, this gives the
instrument the kind of "punch" many jazz and Bosa Nova players are
looking for. Classical players also seem to like the quality of sound
produced by this instrument, especially for contemporary pieces like
Leo Brauer's.
The gamba-like treatment of the side to neck surface with its
smooth surface makes access to the upper nine frets comfortable for the
player. The player's palm slides easily along this surface
without encountering any sharp points or edges.
The top is Engleman spruce with an abalone rosette, five line
black white black mahogany black purflings, flame jatoba bindings with
mitered black white lines sides and back, flame jatoba center strips
withe mitered black white lines on headstock and back, cocabolo veneer
with ebony and maple underlayment on front of headstock, burled black
walnut veneer on back, Brazilian rosewood bridge, Sloane tuners. |
